ALT Grants Scheme 2027 | Applications Now Open

The Association of Law Teachers now welcomes applications for the 2026-7 grants round. We have made up to £10,000 available to support research into all aspects of legal education, such as exploring questions around the nature of legal education and the public and private lives of law schools, innovation in learning and teaching, the student experience, and the use and impact of technology.

We are keen to support the development of early career academics and encourage such members to submit an application to the grant scheme.

Terms and Conditions

  • Applicants must be members of the ALT in the year in which the grant is to be awarded. A membership form can be completed online here:  https://www.lawteacher.ac.uk/join
  • Applicants must be affiliated to a higher or further education institution which must agree to administer any grant awarded.
  • Grants will not normally exceed £3,000 for a single project, but applicants may state a case why funds in excess of that amount are required.
  • Applications which are not on the correct form or which are incomplete or not submitted by the deadline will not be considered.
  • Any guidance in blue in the form below should be deleted before submission.
  • Applications are considered by the ALT Grants Committee, a subcommittee of the ALT’s Executive Committee, and any amounts awarded may differ from the amount applied for.
  • Given the easy availability of meeting recording and transcription technology, grants will not normally be paid for transcription costs only.
  • Grants will not normally cover conference attendance or activities which are concerned only with dissemination.
  • Successful applicants must supply a short summary of their proposed project for inclusion on the ALT website after the award is made and also a report of their findings which could alternatively take the form of a blog or other media output (such as a video or podcast) within 3 months of completing the project.
  • The application should be accompanied by a letter from the institution at which the applicant is based confirming that they are willing to administer the grant.
  • Projects should finish by 31 December 2027.
  • A full version of the ALT Grants Scheme Rules is available at https://lawteacher.ac.uk/policies/
  • The application form is below. Applications should be sent by email to Dr Andrew Gilbert, Chair of the ALT Grants Committee (andrew.gilbert@open.ac.uk), by the deadline which is Friday 13 November 2026. Applicants will be notified whether they have been successful by Monday 30 November 2026.

Criteria

In coming to its decisions the Grants Committee shall exercise its discretion, taking the following matters into account:

  • The extent to which the research is intended to make an empirical and/or theoretical contribution to the field of legal education, particularly addressing current challenges or gaps in the field.
  • The aim and rationale of the research should be clearly articulated and significant.
  • The methodology and methods should be appropriate and robust for realising the aim of the research. Innovative approaches and methods are encouraged where appropriate.
  • The research must be achievable within the funding period.
  • The application must offer good value for money by demonstrating appropriate budgeting and ensuring all items budgeted clearly contribute to the design and delivery of the research.
  • Grants may be used to support the implementation of learning and teaching ideas at the applicant’s own institution but applications should make clear how the research will be evaluated and its findings disseminated, and whether the research has the potential for scalability or adaptation by other institutions.
  • Applicants should give thought to the accessibility of the research and how they can encourage wide participation. Where possible, research should facilitate engagement and participation from students, postgraduate researchers, early career researchers, employers and other sometimes underrepresented stakeholders in the legal education community.
  • The extent to which the research aims to benefit a wide range of learners, particularly underrepresented groups.
